Speak to us of the struggle with Impermanence …
The struggle with understanding impermanence is an old one. Holding onto people and situations is one in which you create great suffering for yourselves and others. Holding onto the beliefs of centuries past is an ancient practice of futility and morbid beliefs. One in which there will never be a solution unless you learn to let go of the old. How do we let go of the old you ask us? This is a dilemma of which only you have the answers.
First, you must ask yourself how do the old beliefs serve me? Some old beliefs are what is holding the fabric of the world together. You believe in gravity…and it is so. You believe in matter…and it is so. You believe in conflict…and it is so. You believe in love…and it is so. But impermanence is one into which you are born. It is the lesson of nothing lasting longer than its time. It is the lesson of temporary earthly life. It is also then, the lesson that everything earthly must come to an end.
And so, you have created Past. Past is a reminder that as long as you can remember an event, it continues to live, to have life and from that life more life and memory may be born. It becomes the interwoven fabric of history. Mostly you do not look upon Past events as useful lessons or as gifts, but as the memory of times gone by and as reaffirmations of life itself. This lineage is strong and gives you a sense of permanence, an illusion of belonging. Into this pattern of memory you have integrated the cellular memory from your ancestors. Bringing forth the memories of all those preceding you, both the positive experiences and the negative experiences. From these experiences you have formed a reality that serves, and hinders, you. This belonging of memory is such that it continues to give life (and some unrest) to your ancestors.
You have also created Future. Future is the promise that life is endless. We know that eternal life is always endless, formless and filled with the Divine. You have given Future this promise, in the attempt to give this gift to future generations of your children and grandchildren into an infinite possibility. This promise of permanence is not yours to give – it belongs solely to the Divine. Yes, you are certainly a part of the Divine, but only as life in all forms is experienced – not just the earthly life with limitations.
Duality is a part of impermanence, for it is through this constant process that both Past and Future are given the essence of life. You are the key to both Past and Present. By holding onto Past, Future is uncertain. By giving life to Future, Past is forgotten. Neither the ancestors nor the children want to lose existence. Yet, you are all three…Past – Present – Future. You cannot but be all of these parts without being you. You are everything; that is what the lesson of impermanence is trying to teach you. When you let go of Past, you move into Present; and when you let go of Present, you move into Future. See life as a constantly changing and evolving process of letting go. Just as living is a constant practice of embracing and letting go. So life is a constantly changing kaleidoscope of chaos and order, creating and letting go, breathing in and breathing out. By joining this kaleidoscope you will release the struggle for earthly permanence and begin truly living a free life.
